Scissors skills need practice, lots and lots of practice. Cutting can be done with all kinds of materials. Cutting playdough is a favorite here and also cutting leaves and even flowers! (We like cutting lavender flowers, then place it into small linen baggies to be used as closet refreshers.) Make practicing cutting paper more fun with cutting strips like these Winter-themed cutting strips!
How to Prepare this Activity:
Print the free Winter cutting pages, there are 2 in total with 5 strips each. (Printing on stiffer paper or cardstock is recommended since it is easier to handle.) Cut it into strips. Provide scissors that the child is comfortable with- round-nosed blades are a must for the young ones.
How to Use the Cutting Strips:
Demonstrate how to hold the strip correctly. These strips are great because it can easily be used by lefthanded kiddos too. Simply hold the strip firmly in the middle with the non-cutting hand without obstructing the cutting line. Start with the straight-lined strips and practice a few times before moving onto the curved ones since those are more tricky. Start cutting at the side with no picture until you reach the picture. Demonstrate how to move your hand slightly and with an angle for the strips with curves.
TIP: Reuse these strips as prewriting lines. Laminate it- or use a dry-erase pocket, and use dry-erase markers to trace the lines! A clever way to get more learning done with these cute Winter printables, right?
A great way for preschoolers to practice those scissors skills this Winter!
