Snowflake Lacing Plates

Snow, snowmen, snowballs and snowflakes! Winter time is here! Develop those fine motor skills and early sewing skills using these snowflake lacing plates you can easily make yourselves!

Make your own Snowflake Lacing plates using our FREE printable templates. This is the perfect Winter activity for preschool kids to practice fine motor skills.

What you need:

  • FREE printable snowflake pictures
  • Paper plates
  • String
  • Glue
  • Sharp object
  • Sticky tape

How to make snowflake lacing plates:

1. Print one of the snowflake pictures (there are 4 different ones), then cut it out. Glue onto the paper plates making sure that it is flat all around the plate.

2. Use your sharp object (I used a bamboo skewer stick, but if you have a long-reach punch, it will be easier) to make the holes. You can make as many or as few holes you want. It is recommended that the younger the child is (the child that will do the lacing), the fewer- and bigger- holes the plates must have.

TIP: use a piece of polystyrene under the paper plate when making the holes so that the holes goes through easily without damaging the surface you are working on.

3. Either use a large plastic needle, or, use sticky tape to make the end of the string stiffer for easier use. You can also dip the end into paint and let it dry so that it gets a hard, like a shoelace. Use a piece of sticky tape to secure the other end to the plate so that it does not slip through.

4. Ready to lace? Younger children will lace all over the plate- which is ok, since neatness is not the objective. Older children can be taught to lace following a pattern. But even then, the objective is to develop fine motor and sewing skills. Keep that in mind ;)

Reuse the lacing plates or keep as decorations! Such a fun way to practice fine motor skills this Winter with snowflake lacing plates!

  1. I love this idea!! What a perfect activity for Christmas! One excellent resource for finding inspiration is Instagram. This popular social media platform is brimming with creative ideas and stunning visuals, making it the perfect place to discover new trends and unique approaches to holiday celebrations. However, not everyone has an Instagram account, which can limit access to this wealth of inspiration with instagram viewer anonymous.
