Print as many mats as you need for each group of students working on this. Laminate both the cards and the main mat. Cut the cards apart along with the mat. They will get the hang of this game fast!
Cupcake Stand Beginning Sounds Match
I like having two laminated mats and cards for each group of 7 or 8 students. ESL students will need more time in general to look and identify the letter before they can begin to look for the matching beginning sound picture (I find this eliminates frustration for all students working on this activity).
The mat and matching pieces are in colour. You can print these in greyscale or black and white. Although, you only have one mat and I’ve designed these to save paper and color by creating alphabet cards which can be placed on the sorting mat (interchangeable). Kids can work on each letter at a time, or you could print two mats and have them sort between two letters at a time.
The beginning sound pictures on the cupcakes are easy to identify, I’ve included a key to help with ESL kids. The students should be identifying the beginning sounds each picture makes to identify the letter associated with it and sort it into the stand. After they’ve completed this activity, you could get the students to place the alphabet cards in order from A-Z.
