Pre-K and kindergarten kids will love this owl themed
alphabet sort activity! Create a sensory experience for kids by placing the owl
cards into a sensory bin with some coloured rice. Students will look for the
owl alphabet cards, identify the letter and then place the owl on the matching
log.
To prepare:
Print and laminate all the cards. You could
also use dry erase inserts for these if you want to skip the lamination step. Print
as many sets as you need for your set of students. Cut up the owl cards, you
could also cut up the log cards but I didn’t cut them up just to provide more
of a challenge for the kids.
Alphabet Sort – Owls on a Log
This activity is so much fun for
preschoolers and kindergarten kids alike. You could totally differentiate
this alphabet activity depending on the level of the
students in your group. Once you’ve prepared the log cards, place them on the table
along with the sensory tub and owl alphabet cards (inside the tub). The kids will look for an owl card and pick one out randomly.
They will identify the letter name and then look for the matching log strip.
There are upper and lowercase letters for practice. Have the kids match all
the owl cards onto the logs. For an easier option, have the kids match only a
few letters at a time.
You could also choose the letters you are working on and focus on a particular set rather than the whole set at once. The kids will love doing this! If you would like these mats larger, print the mats on A3 poster paper.
